Country is more than just music. It’s an attitude, a way of life, and a range of feelings and emotions that include, among other things, love, heartbreak, and yes, patriotism.

Country music artists are great at putting their love of country (aka the U.S.A.) into song. And so to celebrate Independence Day this week, below are ten of the most patriotic songs we could find.

Many of these songs will be familiar to country fans, but think of them like old friends–and what better time than the Fourth of July for a return visit. We’ve accompanied the videos with key lyrics that help illustrate why each song made our list.

Have a great Fourth!

WQYK’s Veronica added that the song for Fourth of July “that really kicks it” for her is “Aaron Tippin, ‘Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly, ’” which happens to be #10 on our Patriotic Playlist.

10. Aaron Tippin – “Where The Stars And Strips And The Eagle Fly”
I pledge allegiance to this flag / And if that bothers you, well that’s too bad / But if you got pride and you’re proud you do / Hey, we could use some more like me and you / Where the stars and stripes and the eagle fly

9. Tim McGraw – “If You’re Reading This”
So lay me down / In that open field out on the edge of town / And know my soul / Is where my momma always prayed that it would go / If you’re readin’ this I’m already home.

8. Darryl Worley – “Have You Forgotten”
Have you forgotten how it felt that day? / To see your homeland under fire / And her people blown away / Have you forgotten when those towers fell? / We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell / And you say we shouldn’t worry ’bout bin Laden / Have you forgotten?

7. Alan Jackson – “Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning”
Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day / Were you in the yard with your wife and children / Or working on some stage in L.A. / Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke / Risin’ against that blue sky / Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor / Or did you just sit down and cry?

6. Trace Adkins – “Arlington”
We’re thankful for those thankful for the things we’ve done / We can rest in peace, ’cause we were the chosen ones / We made it to Arlington, yea, dust to dust / Don’t cry for us, we made it to Arlington.

5. John Michael Montgomery – “Letters From Home”
I hold it up and show my buddies / Like we ain’t scared and our boots ain’t muddy / And they all laugh / Like there’s something funny / ‘Bout the way I talk / When I say, “Mama sends her best y’all” / I fold it up and put it in my shirt / Pick up my gun and get back to work / And it keeps me drivin’ on / Waitin’ on letters from home

4. Toby Keith – “American Soldier”
I’m an American Soldier an American / Beside my brothers and my sisters, I will proudly take a stand / When liberty’s in jeopardy, I will always do what’s right / I’m out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight / American Soldier, I’m and American Soldier.

Very sweet. I'm glad you've had a great Dad!

When Alan Jackson started writing "Small Town Southern Man," he had it in his mind to portray the kind of simple, well-meaning people he grew up around. Alan hadn't intended it to be autobiographical, but he did put some personal touches in the song. He made a reference to his father, who died eight years ago, and he included some of his own parenting philosophies in the lyrics.
